At least Four persons were killed and eight others went missing after a country boat carrying 29 passengers capsized in Chilika lagoon near Berhampur in southern part of Odisha on 10th December 2016, Saturday afternoon. Ganjam collector PC Choudhury confirmed the four deaths.
Thirteen persons were rescued by onlookers and volunteers and admitted in MKCG Medical College and Hospital, Berhampur and at Rambha hospital.
Amitabh Thakur deputy inspector general of police (southern range) said rescue teams comprising personnel of Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF) and fire department officers are busy in rescue operation. “It would be too early to figure out what had exactly happened and about the casualties,” he said.
The overloaded boat was going from Sabulia to Ghantasila. Most of the passengers were tourists who were on a fun trip to the brackish lagoon, the largest coastal lagoon in India.
