Commissionerate police to offer cash reward to Good Samaritans

Bhubaneswar: In a bid to encourage volunteerism among people for helping road accident victims, the Commissionerate Police has now decided to provide monetary assistance to such ‘Good Samaritans’.

As part of the Good Samaritan scheme of the Odisha Government, Commissionerate Police has now decided to give a reward of Rs 1,000 for those who would lend a helping hand in shifting road accident victims to nearest hospitals.

Police Commissioner YB Khurania on Friday informed to have taken a number of measures including financial assistance to all police stations under Bhubaneswar-Cuttack Urban Police Districts for the welfare of the people in distress.

“We have also decided to ensure that the people who will help in shift road accident victims are not harassed. Rather their statements would be recorded at their residence instead of police stations,” said Khurania.

Senior police officials said that in several instances, a lot of road accident victims are losing their lives following delay in providing emergency treatment as onlookers fearing police action usually do not offer help.

On June 19, a person was shifted to hospital after a delay of nearly 45 minutes to hospital by RPF after he was injured in a train mishap at Bhubaneswar railway station.
