Bhubaneswar : In a major judgment, the Rayagada District and Sessions Judge Court on Tuesday awarded life imprisonment to former Inspector of Schools (SI) Netrananda Dandasena in the sensational Tikiri UP School lady teacher Itishree Pradhan murder case.
Earlier, the court had convicted Dandasena and deferred the pronouncement of verdict to today. The hearing of the case had ended on April 4. Itishree, a resident of Puri, had succumbed to injuries after being set ablaze on October 27, 2013 in a room the Tikiri UP School premises where she was serving on a contractual basis for a monthly salary of Rs 4000. During her initial period of posting, she had found it difficult to live there. SI Netranadan Dandasena had assured her of every help and had sought sexual favours which she had opposed strongly.
The lady teacher’s ordeal started after she lodged an FIR against Dandasena at the Tikiri police station. She was pressurised relentlessly to withdraw the complaint. Irked over her refusal, the assailant had torched her saying that she had to pay the price for not withdrawing the FIR. She was admitted to a private hospital in Vishakahapatnam where she succumbed to her burn injuries on November 1.
On November 2, the State government had ordered the Crime Branch to investigate into the murder case. But the CB reportedly failed to make any major breakthrough in the case. Later, the Supreme Court, while hearing a PIL filed by Bangalore based Odia law graduate Sudipta Lenka, had handed over the inquiry to CBI in January 2015.
