Angul: Gitanjali Samal is a teacher by profession, but her passion lies with the environment. She has planted over 20000 trees in Angul and Kendrapara districts till date.
Gitanjali belongs to Budhapanka village under Banarpal block in Angul district. She has completed her higher education in Botany and works as a science teacher. Her husband is a bank employee.
Gitanjali is currently serving at Madhu Sagar Vidyapeeth in Kendrapara as a science teacher. Before joining as a teacher in Kendrapara school, Gitanjali was staying with her husband in Gujarat.
The teacher-cum-environmentalist, Gitanjali has so far spent a staggering amount of Rs 8 lakh for purchasing and planting trees and their maintenance. She spends nearly Rs 20,000 per month from her salary for this work.
Gitanjali said that she has been planting saplings for eight years now and will continue to do so for saving the earth from ecological hazards. Trees can reduce the impact of global warming’.
She says she has been doing this on her own and does not get any donations from any organisation. She goes around by carrying saplings on her scooter and plant those by paying the labour charge for digging pits.
Gitanjali has been hailed by many environmentalists and intellectuals for her noble work and the endeavour for plantation drive to save the ecology.
