Man Digs 3-km canal for 30 years to irrigate fields in Gaya village

Gaya: “It took me 30 years to dig this canal to take water to a pond in the village,” said Laungi Bhuiyan who has dug the canal on his own in Gaya.

Bhuiyan carved out a three-kilometre-long canal to take rainwater from hills to the fields of his village at Kothilawa in Lahthua area of Gaya.

He said when his fellow villagers are going to cities to earn a livelihood, he decided to stay back to dig the canal for himself.

Kothilwa village is surrounded by dense forestland mountains, about 80 km away from Gaya district headquarters. This village is infested by Maoists.

The sources of livelihood for the people of this region are farming and animal husbandry.

During the rainy season, the water falling from the mountains used to flow into the river which clicked the idea within Bhuiyan to take up carving out a canal.
